Customer Reviews
I just pickup up this saw over the weekend and did quite a bit of testing on it. First off, discard and don't even use the saw blades that come with it - they are worthless and won't give you good results. After changing the blades the machine really outperformed my own expectations. It cut faster, smoother, finer and better then expected. The laser alighnment needed a little fine tuning out of the box, but that was easy to do (and the laser is most convenient for long and short straight cuts). The quick change blade system is very easy to use and really 'Locks' the blade in place. The rubber grips make a nice ergonomic fit and really cuts down on vibration nicely thus making cutting easier to use and more accurate. I am a hobbyist woodworker so only needed this for light duty and it is perfect for my uses. I cannot say enough about this saw especially for under $50...A great buy and very satisified.
Update 7/15/2010: After actually using the saw for some projects, I am even more impressed with it. The laser works good on both long and short cuts; turn it off for circular cuts. The laser guide and plunge features were great when I had to make some cuts in the cieling...nice and straight cuts and not a 'hack' job. The 'Ugly Saw' blade is really nice for straight, beveled and curved cuts - super smooth too. I have had no issues uneven cuts, wobbling or even the smaller footprint - it's actually perfectly balanced for the machine. This tool cuts true, aggressive yet smooth and the variable speed and 'Plunge' cutting features are just great. Bevel cutting is easy to use, accurate and also makes very smooth cuts through plywood and pine - I did spend about 30 minutes getting the guide to adjust easily the first time out of the box. Once after the initial setup, switching from flat cuts to bevel cuts takes less then 30 seconds.
Another nice feature of the laser is that it lets you know you have power to the saw. You plug it in and if you have a live connection, the laser turns on and shines up to 10' - 12' feet away letting you know you're in business. My other power tools, I need to activiate the tool to ensure I am connected and ready to roll. I guess in a way, this could be considered a safety feature as well.
I guess the only complaints I have are that bevel cutting can only be done in 2 positions, 22.5 degrees and 45 degrees. Second, you have to unplug the saw when changing blades (or switching to bevel cutting) - I am not sure if there is a built in safety switch that disengages the motor when changing blades, but I am not going to find out the hard way (maybe I should read the instrucions). Third, which is more of a wish compared to a complaint, is if they could make longer blades because this tool has more then enough power to cut through everything I have tried it on. I do a lot of work with landscape timbers and a longer blade would eliminate the need for me to get a reciprocating saw or using my circular saw and having to to do double cuts (one cut on one side, flip the timber, then do a second cut).
This tool is well worth the $20-30 more cost of entry level jigsaws and for under $50, it is now my best, most versatle tool and most used power tool I have in the garage.
At the price of $47.88, I would say the machine is very good for home general use. The motor is quite powerful. It cuts pretty well. But the cutting blade is way behind the nose so that I cannot see where the blade is cutting. There is the laser beam, but the blade do not seems to follow straight.
